Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression those gray, boring garage floors you see in most homes are

concrete. But aren't sidewalks made out of concrete too? So how come the colors are so different? Is one of the surfaces treated? Which one is concrete in it's natural form?

Your correct Mark. The floors in the garage are painted or stained while the ones you see on sidewalks are just that the cement as it comes from the truck. Also the finishing also changes the sheen of the surface making it look a bit different also. In addition the hardness of the cement will cause the color to change as will any additives put into the mix. Still another is natural wear. The garage does not see the weather as the sidewalks do, so the finish surface is much more like it was when it was poured as apposed to the garage that is protected from the sun and elements.

Some staining products like paint help keep the floor cleaner as it prevents the chalking often seen when you use a broom on it. Stains tend to last a lot longer then paint as it gets into the pores of the material better. Are you looking at doing your garage? Ideally an epoxy finish is much better. And not the stuff the big box stores sell.

garage floors usually receive power troweling ( http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200334491_200334491?cm_mmc=Google-pla-_-Construction-_-Concrete%20Power%20Trowels%20%2B%20Screeds-_-999400&ci_sku=999400&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw={keyword} ) whereas sidewalks & driveways get a broom finish for pedestrian traction,,, some color difference is also due to the substitution of flyash for cement - stain is just a preference for a better looking floor - the sealer on top of the stain is for cleanliness & maintaining the appearance

I live in Verona NJ. I am thinking about turning my small mudroom into a half bath. If I do this my back door will now be enclosed and I will now put sliders in my dinning room and build a small deck off of the dinning room. The deck will likely be about 14x14 made of a composite material. The bathroom will be just a toilet and a sink( water lines from kitchen are very close). There is a radiator where the doors will go, so it needs to be moved. I know this is a lot of info, but, any thoughts on the job or a ball park of what I should expect to pay. I have not called anyone yet to get any estimates.
