Health of my chickens

I have a few chickens with scaly legs. Is this painful for them? Is there a treatment. Also one of my hens has gone lame, with one leg just hanging by her side. She can't walk at all. I don't know if she broke it, or how to tell if it is broke. My girls are my pets, and the idea of chicken soup is not appealing to me. I know I'm not a great farmer in regards to this. Any hope here?

I'm not sure if there's any others here that raise chickens, but I found a couple places that could help. The first being urban chickens and the second a forum all about backyard chickens. I hope you find some help for you feathered friends. http://urbanchickens.org/chicken-illness-injury-and-disease/http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-raise-backyard-chickens-in-your-city-the-basics-of-raising-chickens

Another website I belong to is: www.backyardchickens.com. It is a site with a forum to ask questions, get ideas, and all round knowledge. Good luck!

The scales on their legs gets thicker and looks worse the older they get. It is normal, and since we farm folks don't raise them as pets, we don't care how their legs look. If the other chicken can't walk, she most likely broke it. If you want, you can take it to a vet and they may be able to help you with it.

It is called scaly legs and they are mites under her skin. Type in "The Chicken Chick" and she will give you the treatment options. She knows her chickens and has a wealth of knowledge on every topic for chickens.

I use Bag Balm it's in a green medal tin. You can get it at feed stores or order it online. I put it on the chickens legs about every 3 or 4 days. It works good.
