Kitchen Remodel - Custom Farm Table Island

We moved to our home about 8 months ago and the home featured a builder basic but serviceable kitchen that was a little short on storage and had zero personality.
Lovely circa 1990's basic oak cabinets. No hardware, no backsplash, laminate countertops, minimal lighting, and basic appliances that were barely working or in some cases wer not working! Did you also notice that it didn't have a microwave.
The cabinets seemed to just hang there. The island was barely big enough for two bar stools and there wasn't much space left for a table. We could probably put a bistro table in but we are a family of six! So, the wheels began to turn with making over the island and adding cabinet space to it so that we could have much needed kitchen storage space and a perfect spot for casual family meals.
As my plans hatched, I knew I wanted to improve the lighting, paint the cabinetry a cream crisp white, update the appliances including a gas line so that I could have a gas range, add a microwave, backsplash and trim out the cabinets. As the plans evolved I hatched a plan to create a custom cornice board above the sink to connect the cabinetry and give the kitchen a focal point...
We also captured more space for storage and serving by capping off and creating a shelf above the 28" pony wall and topping it with a granite top. We love the function and definition this added to our kitchen.
Once we added the cabinets to the island I wrapped the whole thing in bead board, did a custom paint finish and had a custom farm table top commissioned by a local artisan to top it off. The island is now 10' 6" long and we can seat 8 easily! This kitchen is one of my favorite spots in our home now! What do you like? Please check out my blog for more details.
