I need some perinneal plants/flowers that will do good with little light on a porch.I want the area to smell good since its a sitting area and any plants that repel mosquitos would be great as well.Ive planted some chocolate mint already in this area. These plants would be in pots. The area of my porch is also near where the dogs go out so i don't want to have anything posinous to animals.Any suggestions?

  • Here is a link for some plants that may fit the bill for you. http://www.infobarrel.com/Top_10_Common_Plants_that_Repel_Mosquitoes_and_Other_Insects How is Sanford buy the way? My wife and I almost purchased the old airport that was for sale about 22 years ago. The only reason we did not was the power plant. Just a bit close for our comfort at that time.

Thanks you must be referring to Sharon Harris nuclear plant. I have lived here my whole life so its home to me a small town feel but only 30 minutes from Cary/Raleigh one way and Southern Pines the other. A lot of people retire in this area and Southern pines .A guy that works with me at the police dept is from New York not sure what part he loves it here. Let me know if you ever have any questions. Thanks for the flower tips.

Marvin, I don't think your mint will be that happy in the shade. Herbs in general want as much sun as you can give them. Some hostas-Aphrodite is one-have flowers that are quite fragrant and would do well in a pot on your porch. You might also consider small shrubs. Daphne is somewhat fussy but you cannot beat the fragrance when it blooms, and one of the small clethras like "16 Candles" would give you fragrance later in the season. As a bonus, you could plant any of these into a shady area of your yard at the end of the season.
