Southeast Solar Co on Jan 23, 2012After four year study, we decided to go with Polysteeel construction. This is way better than SIPS as it is a solid construction and one can install radiant floor heating with solar backup to boot. We have no dust, termites and the home is very quiet. The cost is almost comparable to building with SIPS. If built with this material, one can also have floors made of the same material making the home whole lot more efficient and very durable. If you need further help send me an email southeastsolar@gmail.comHelpful Reply

SawHorse Design Build on Jan 23, 2012We have worked with SIP's Polysteel, and Superior Walls. All have their benefits. Ultimately the design of the house and the budget will determine which system is best. Let us know if you need a green builder. Here is a house that we recently completed- www.midtowngreen.net or if you want a less modern house- www.ecolumina.org The key is to balance the building design with mechanical systems. If the house has not been designed yet, then we can help save up to 30% off your energy bills just on proper site planning. Let us know if we can help.Helpful Reply

Brenda W on Jan 23, 2012thanks all, i have called a few of those SIP suppliers but typically get the 'we don't know of any builders in the area'. But i will keep trying, going to go to the home show and see if anyone there is SIP savy. I am open to other choices, the land is raw 14 acre so its wide open as to what we decide. i thought this was the wave of future home building, but finding a builder is not as simple as i thought. I also wanted to get some SIP friendly house plans, but some of the solar passive ones on solarplans.com caost $1500 which i thought was kinda steep.Helpful Reply

SawHorse Design Build on Jan 23, 2012It is not difficult to build with SIPS. It starts with a good design. Once the design is completed, then the plans need to be engineered and priced by a SIPS supplier. They are easy to install and our framing crews can put them together. The key is to make sure that all of the windows, doors etc have been selected before the panel are ordered. We are working on plans for a house in Sandy Springs right now that will be possible be using SIPS for the walls and roofline.Helpful Reply

SawHorse Design Build on Jan 23, 2012What is nice about these wall systems is that you can downsize the HVAC systems since the house will be tighter and will not loose as much energy. A set of house plans for $1500 seems a bit high if they are not being customized. There are many local architects that may have plans to share with you. If you are looking to start from scratch- you could pay many times that.Helpful Reply

Southeast Solar Co on Jan 24, 2012SIPS buildings are nice. But given the scenario of tornadoes in December and January, ( As happened yesterday in Alabama) one will need to think seriously about ones safety. Will the home hold up to such hurricane force winds? What is the chance of survival during a home fire? What are the chances of bug infestation? Yamini, who is a regular contributor to this site is an architect (LEED AP). I am sure she can get you the right set of plans for a very reasonable cost.Helpful Reply
