I love the idea of engineering prints from Staples that can be printed very large for a small amount of money. But I really wanted a way to use those that was interchangeable. I'm not big on permanent things, especially big pieces so I set out to make this huge double frame that allows me to easily switch out the image whenever I'm in the mood!
At about $3 each print, it's super cost effective and a great way to update your decor. This huge frame was pretty simple to put together and it's been over 3 years, moved across the country, been updated with at least 8 different family pictures and t's still going strong!
I had a plywood sheet cut to the size I wanted at Lowe's.
Then using a miter box and saw, I cut the exterior and interior frame. with common whiteboards.
I cut a piece of duck cloth fabric from hobby lobby to the size of the plywood board. I used spray glue on the wood and pulled the fabric tight as I laid it down and smoothed it out. The pattern is bold but not much of it actually shows when you have a picture in so it has worked well.
I then painted the frames a light grey and lightly sanded the edges. I used a nail gun along with wood glue to attach the frame to the outer edges first.
I cut cardboard slightly smaller than the interior frame pieces and glued it on the back of the interior frame to raise it off the wood and create a lip so the picture could pop in and out easily. I then glued and nailed it down like the outer frame, paying close attention to not nail too close to the inside of the frame so I wouldn't block the are where the picture goes.
Using screw eyes and wire, I got it ready to frame. This piece isn't very heavy but I wanted it to be really secure so it wouldn't have any chance of falling off the wall.
I used a heavy duty monkey hook and set it over our couch. I love it! It has been so much fun and is a big statement piece. The fabric and my furniture is neutral enough that I can switch out pillow covers or other decor and update the room while this is a lasting piece in the room. I could even paint over the duck cloth fabric if I ever grow tired of this green chevron.
