I have an old-fashioned but very functional bathroom including outdated, stained faucet handles-spigot on an old but
I would like to replace the clear acrylic hot-cold water handles which are stained BLACK from within (age? mold?). I've been told that in order to replace these, a worker would need to break thru the TILE WALL!? Is this my only option for a tub install dating from the 1980's??

Yamini LEED AP at Urbanmotifs on Feb 03, 2011Yes, There is valve inside the wall that controls the mechanism. so, you will need to break the tile. Sorry, but you can save if you want to your own demo.and retile yourself after plumbing is done.Helpful Reply

Yamini LEED AP at Urbanmotifs on Feb 03, 2011Sorry to hear about that, you can shop around for somebody to do it. Now, is better than wait for summer because demand for labor is more around that time. From experience I see getting renovation done in the leaner months is usually cheaper...Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Feb 03, 2011If the valves are still working fine...aka not leaking...you can get replacement knobs...for cheap. Add new estuchions and it will look completely new. I replaced a faucet just like this last year because it was leaking..there was a nasty chip out of the internal valve seat...I went in from behind..the back was a closet..I replaced the faucet without having to demo any tile. drywall is easy to patch...tile..not so.Helpful Reply

Darby C on Feb 03, 2011KMS is right. There are other ways of replacing the valve, if you need to, beside breaking the tile. Keep looking for someone to do the work till you get the results you want.Helpful Reply
