What can I use so that the writing stays on the spoons? The outdoor polyurethane spray seems to be flaking off...

Try a acrylic clear spray from Krylon or Aleens also carries a acrylic sealer that Michaels carries.

are those silver plate or higher quality stainless? real silver tarnishes, and is antimicrobial...that is, it kills germs, even the good ones. silver is used in a salve that treats burns, keeping the microbes down so they don't become infected. i'm not so sure i'd want it in a potted plant that needs the good bugs to grow.

Cheap "silverware" can be purchased at Wal Mart. Not real silver. I bought up some for my outdoor picnics as the plastic utensils break so easily when trying to cut up food. The utensils are packaged in bundles and last time I checked you get four, or more, in a bundle for one dollar.

You can purchase clear acrylic spray Krylon - works wonders and is much less expensive.

I would start by using paint pens to write with and then spray with an acrylic clear spray like others suggested. sun fades all other writing pens.

I see you used polyurethane spray to "seal" spoons. What did you use to paint the spoons and write the names with? Maybe dip in or spray primer & chalkboard paint & then use the pens as suggested as above then find an outdoor, rust-o-ilium type sealer??
