How I Added Faux Board and Batten To Our Stairwell

When we moved into our home the stairwell that connects the basement, main floor and upstairs in our home was dark and creepy with uneven walls and orange hardwood floors. I desired a crisp, high contrast space that didn't seem so spooky.

This is what the hallway looked like "before".

My first step was to put up the faux grasscloth wallpaper that I had chosen for the top half of the wall. I then attached MDF 1x4 trim half way up the wall using construction adhesive and a brad nailer. (you can see the uneven patches of the wall in the above picture. I sanded down these areas as best as possible. Our walls are plaster which is a little more difficult that working with drywall in my opinion).

There is no skirting on the side of our stairs so added the same MDF 1x4 trim to the wall just above the stairs, parallel to the trim 1/2 way up the wall. I then added the same trim vertically in predetermined locations on the wall.

I used caulk on all the seams around the trim.

I also striped and stained our stairs and upstairs hardwood floors, I stained the handrail to match too!

I painted the trim and wall halfway down with white semigloss paint.

I think that the black frames look striking against the neutral wallpaper and bright white trim.

The space is now a lot brighter and much less spooky!
