3po3 on Mar 01, 2012Sorry to answer your question with questions, but do you mean that you have existing linoleum and you want to add tiles on top? If so, the answer is "you shouldn't." You are better off tearing off the linoleum and putting in a new subfloor.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Mar 01, 2012Sometimes its ok to do this, sometimes its not. Depending upon the type of linoleum that is placed down will determine if it can be used as you say. In any case you need to nail down wire mesh over the linoleum to offer up a way for the thin set to bond. Otherwise the linoleum will resist bonding to the cement and the tiles will come off. Also you need to be choosing the correct type of floor cement to use. You cannot use out of the can type of glue as it will never dry. I would however even though you can do this, tear out the old and start fresh. The results are often much better and the tile floor will not stick up as high at the doorways causing a tripping hazard.Helpful Reply
