has anyone used Behr premium wood coating?

Peace Painting Co., Inc. on Mar 19, 2012For the best products, go to a paint store for paint. Behr is rated #1 in Consumer Reports but they use their own standards, not industry wide acceptable standards. I know of no professional painters that use this product. Also, keep in mind, that if your fence is in the sun, solid stain will peel like paint. I would go to a local Sher-Wms and ask for their input. Best, CharlesHelpful Reply

HandyANDY - Handyman & All Repairs, LLC on Mar 20, 2012Peace is on the money as always.....none of us Behr and most pro's are using Sherwin Williams. If you are using pressure treated wood...or Yellawood.....you should still wait 3 to 6 months before staining the fence.Helpful Reply

Becky on Mar 20, 2012Wow! 3-6 months! think I'll purchase the lumber now so it can be stained before the fence is built. Do y'all think that's a good idea or not? I have so many plants that it would be really difficult to stain the fence after it's built.Helpful Reply

Peace Painting Co., Inc. on Mar 20, 2012That's the best way anyway. Ideally, you can make a trough from a gutter section and soak the boards, When the moisture content in the boards is below 20%, you are good to go. CPHelpful Reply

Becky on Mar 20, 2012Ok, lets see if I understand. I purchase lumber now & let it sit till the end of May, that's when the fence will be built, then soak the boards in the stain in a trough. I assume we check the moisture content before staining begins but how does one do that? Thanks again for your help, BeckyHelpful Reply

Peace Painting Co., Inc. on Mar 20, 2012That's right. You are welcome. I use a moisture meter ($60) if there is a question but almost always go by the feel and look of the wood. Some comes wet, some does not, so there is no hard and fast time it needs to dry. Being narrow fencing, it will dry out faster, so when it appears dried out, it is. I'm certain yours will be dry by then, especially in LA. Chas.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Mar 24, 2012Is there a reason your opting for PT for the fence? I use it for posts but not the pickets...there I use cedar and use an oil based product like PenofinHelpful Reply

Becky on Mar 26, 2012The reason our fence builder is using yellawood is because he says it doesn't warp like cedar does. Our fence will have a curved top with a double reveal on top. We'll have to stain it before it's built because I have too many plants to make it feasible to stain it after it's built. Therefore I'm looking for the longest lasting stain possible.Helpful Reply

Peace Painting Co., Inc. on Mar 26, 2012Cedar does not warp Becky, but yellawood can because it is pine. Cedar is more expensive too.Helpful Reply

Becky on Mar 26, 2012Thanks for the info on cedar. I'll talk to our fence builder about the increase in cost. We're at $6,500. now for 300' using the post that are already in place.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Mar 26, 2012I have seen more PT warp than cedar...When PT is "new" it can be pretty soggy with the chemicals...as it drys it can twist warp etc. In Our area cedar is dry to start and tends to stay true...it is the uneven drying that causes most warp.Helpful Reply

Birdie Berghuis on Apr 14, 2015A lot of painters say that wood needs to cure and wait for a year to paint or stain.. Gives the wood time to "do it's thing" whatever that is!Helpful Reply

Cornelia Schott on Jun 17, 2015We used this Behr product and prefer this over Sherwin Williams. We used both and Behr has held up much better than Sherwin Williams. Easy to apply and clean up.Helpful Reply
