The Trick to Making Builder Grade Oak Beautiful!

My house is full of builder grade cabinets including a oak wall around the fireplace. I'm a huge fan of the details and character of the mantle, but not of the blonde oak covering it. It has way more potential than that! I needed to find a way to make it magnificent!
This was completely experimental and worked out in my favor! Here's how to replicate it.
Start by stripping the surface. Then apply Varathane Weathered Gray wood stain in 2 coats. Next apply Folk Art white wax with a cloth and wipe off any excess wax to leave the wax in the grain of the oak.
If you want you can apply a polyurethane to protect it, but the stain and wax hold up very well! This is the beautiful side of oak that is hardly seen and I'm loving the wood grain! Check out my blog www.mommystoolbelt.com for the whole journey to get to this beautiful wood wall!

  • Varathane Weathered Gray Stain   (Home Depot)

Would this be durable enough for kitchen cabinets ? Can you really poly over wax? It’s gorgeous!
