DIY Bookcase Media Wall

I live in a tiny condo that was filled with boring apartment-grade finishes when we bought it. I've slowly been customizing each space, and my favorite way to do that is with built-ins. I just finished this built-in bookcase media wall in my living room. The lower cabinets are stock wall cabinets from Home Depot. I made the countertop out of cedar 2 x 4's using a Kreg Jig, and the upper bookcases were made with MDF and 1 x 3 lumber. I topped each one off with a very inexpensive light (actually found in the outdoor lighting section) from Home Depot.

Very nice. I want to do this in my parents bedroom because they have no space with the dresser they have.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I noticed the center section of your base is 6" further out than the sides. Was this just for the appearance or is there a use for the space behind? I am planning to do the same thing along a wall in a room with carpet. Would you recommend cutting carpet out? Did you use any anchors to the floor or just in wall studs? Great job
How wide is the wall?
