Help with range hood...big,old,ugly...

Another old house project. There seems to be a lot of those in this place. I don't know what my options are. I have no idea what price this is to replace. Or...can it be removed, cleaned and painted, how? Or should we take it to automotive paint place? The light and fan do not work like they should either. This is a 78 dbl mobile home. Hubs not really a handy man. Eek!
You can see this is NOT attached to the wall but flares out over the counter in the back the same as in the front. It IS vented through the upper cabinet and the light and fan do work...just not great!
Side view..flares out over the counter....
The back side. Over the counter.
Better pic?

It usually hangs on the cabinets above. I replaced mine and put a microwave there instead. If I'm cooking on the stove top, I just turn the fan on my microwave. If not, they have spray paint for appliances.

I think you can remove it. If so, remove it and clean it very well. I would go to Ace or True Value and speak to some one there. They have so many staff members that really know what they are doing. They can advise you on the type of paint to use. They could let you know if and how it needs to be sanded down.

Thank You JoAnn yes I am sure I can remove it...I know they can be cleaned and painted, just not sure how. This is open to the back also, flared out over the counter.

If the fan part of this appliance is not working, consider replacing the entire unit. If you plan on a DIY, make sure you turn off the breaker (and test the line) before disconnecting. Consider pricing over at Sears.

This does not look like it is venting out, just circulating the air. I would just get rid of it and paint under the cabinet with an enamel paint you can easily keep clean. If you need to vent, use a small window fan on exhaust to get the air in the room moved out, this is only recirculating the air and cooking odors anyway. These unvented range hoods tend to just become grease traps and stink the room up more in the long run than help.

@Bernice H i assumed a mobile home rarely would have a vented appliance, but yours is more likely a permanently set house double wide, so they may have installed venting. I would ditch it anyway, close off the outside venting opening so no varmints ever get in. You can buy new simple ones under a couple hundred bucks, but where it sits in the room, I would just rid myself of the thing and the 'ugly overhangs'. I would have a ceiling fan in the kitchen or the next room that the kitchen is open to and your air will circulate just fine.

Chuck it and buy a new one, If light and fan don't work there is no use having it.

@Bernice H Well if you are hell bent on keeping it. LOL. I would try and clean as much as you can . I use Castrol Pro-Clean ( purple jug) engine cleaner that can be purchased at Walmart in automotive dept. Take any parts off that you can and soak them .If you can get some help to remove it then clean any parts you couldn't get to while it was installed

Open cabinet..if pipe goes up it is venting out and worth keeping. There is appliance paint that you could use or replace it entirely. It's not complicated but you would need help holding it in place.

If it's old it might be just gunked up with grease and dust...you could try to get in there with an old toothbrush and decreased or if it's bolted in remove the blade for a good scrub? That might get it working like New again.. then u could repaint or even add wood to match your cabinets to make it pretty :)

They start around 24$ and go up
    • Bernice H Bernice H on May 23, 2016
Thank You Kay Smith yes,but I haven't seen any reasonable online like this...it flares out over the countertop in back also...vents ..just not as strong as I would think, and changed lightbulb, still very dim,.
  • Shirley Bolton McSilvers Shirley Bolton McSilvers on May 23, 2016
Sometimes it just needs a good cleaning. Also you can either spray paint it or get the brushed chrome appliance covering like they use on dishwashers. HVe fun with it. And go with what your budget can afford. Could also look for a used one.
    • Bernice H Bernice H on May 23, 2016
Thank You Shirley Bolton McSilvers. Yes I am thinking refurbishing this thing may be the best idea, this is not attached to the wall but flares out in back over the countertop. I guess I wasn't very clear, but you can see in the picture over to the other side of the counter and stove. Haven't found any online like it except for very expensive....not happening here. Thanks! Old manuf homes are challenging!

Well,, since the home is so old (I lived in one this vintage in the past); you don't know how much grease and gunk is up inside the works. I would investigate to see if you could just get one to replace it reasonably. Remember, a mobile is like a tract home - many things are not "standard"....so measure, measure, measure. Hope this helps.

    • Bernice H Bernice H on May 23, 2016
Thank You Thenitecrow yes...I can do this! I am not coming across clearly. Wait...wait...wait for it! I am not real good at posting. I may end up in gardening! Ha
  • Bernice H Bernice H on May 23, 2016
Ohhhh yes next posting will be about the kitchen lighting on ceiling full of fluorescent tubes! Good gravy what have we gotten ourselves into!

I spray painted one of these about 20 years ago....worked fine......sometimes when I take things apart I take a lot of pictures in case I get lost putting it back together.....and keep all parts together.....best to "get handy" if husband isn't......and it is fun !

I had one similar to this when we had our mobile home. I took it out to the patio and spray washed it with degreaser dish soap, replaced the filter as it was just too 'yucky' to clean up (I think walmart and HD has them). After a few days drying in the sun, I went at it with a black matte spray paint inside and out. When that dried, I spray painted it a verdigris copper color to blend with our kitchen. I made sure I got 'fire safe' spray paint, especially with a gas stove. It turned out great and lasted another 12 years with gentle cleaning until we sold the mobile and bought our conventional home. Total cost at the time was about $15.00, but it would probably be $20 or so now.

Thank You Barbara this place can turn out to be a money pit..I gotta make do awhile..thank you..this is my leaning right now.

If you can unscrew it to clean, degrease all. In any event, spray-paint interior flat black. Purchase copper sheathing (by the roll), measure, cut to size - leaving enough overhang to wrap to inside, glue in place. You'll likely want to poly. the copper to make cleaning easier later. You can also consider creating a hammered effect on copper, with a wash of black to "age."
  • Bobbie Littlefield Bobbie Littlefield on May 23, 2016
Love the suggestions above...but I would take it out, take it to a self serve car wash with degreaser and blast it til its clean. Then I would take it to an electrostatic painter or car painter and price my options. Harder finish and some are gorgeous!

Oohhhh Commenter Betty Robinson said to paint the interior black...that is what I was referring to! Ha! Blast is good!

PS-I have the same overhead lighting problem in my kitchen. Covered the acrylic with the static cling stained glass looking paper available at Lowes or Home Depot. Looks lovely now-short term till I focus an electrician....
    • Bernice H Bernice H on May 23, 2016
Thank You Bobbie Littlefield. Yes I am going to need some design suggestions soon. Most of the panels are yellow or cracked. Must be 6 flourescent tubes scattered over the ceiling! So I will need light because it is so dark in there, but not giving off too much heat. I really do want to get rid of the plastic panels but then the whole ceiling will need redesigned.
  • CrowEyes CrowEyes on May 23, 2016
It would be easier if you could take the entire hood out. Consider cleaning it first with a citrus spray ( see pic), which will break down any grease. Wash to remove any citrus oil (Dawn). Sand with a light -grain sandpaper. Prime (spray). Paint (spray). Reinstall. Two glasses of Merlot.

THANK YOU so much! I will read these to hubs slowwwly....so he will get the idea. He has many other gifts, public speaking, teaching but this stuff...not so much. I always hold my breath! And Merlot is too dry for us...sweet and light works! Ha!

I don't think it's worth prettying it up until it WORKS. The first thing I'd do is take pictures from every angle and write down what make and model your trailer is, and any information you see on a label on the hood. Then I'd go to either a trailer supply or some place like Lowe's and see what a new one would cost. Then find out what an electrician would charge to fix the light and fan. Then you'll know whether to fix it or replace it. If you do decide to keep it, AFTER it works right, if you want to make it look nice, You might want to cover it with copper, like Betty suggested, or maybe stainless steel? And, if you paint it, use a light color underneath; you need all the light you can get.

I love my LED can lights. They screw in like a regular light then have wire springs that old them in place. I got mine a Lowes at a very good price.
  • Jon Dupree Jon Dupree on May 23, 2016
scrub/replace the light bulb cover, a replacement fan can prolly be found on the net cheap enough (two wires and two or three screws) clean the hood give it a light sanding and spay it with some hi-temp rustoleum paint (tell the guy at the hardware store you need paint for your BBQ grill.) Finding a new replacement hood will most likely be rather costly.
  • Cindy Cindy on May 24, 2016
you can buy high heat paint its great for things like that
  • Bernice H Bernice H on May 31, 2016
Hi everyone..an update...so far......not a done deal yet but we decided to go with a new hood. HOWEVER...it is not the same. It is a standard 30 inch,ductible...with a flat back that goes against the wall which will not happen here. So we will have to do cosmetics on it,which is ok. The problems became more evident. Yes a thorough cleaning would make it look good, but the fan and light and plastic screen still presented a problem. To get a big one like we have...expensive. Even this standard one was 99.00 plus metal pieces. I just will not pay more. I rarely cook! But don't tell anybody! This is venting, some were a little cheaper but did not vent. So we will just hang it and paint around it...make the back pretty....whatever it takes! It will be 106 today and hotter through the week,no one feels like cleaning the biggie out there in this heat, especially if the fan and light won't be improved. We have the handyman for a couple of days..gotta make hay while he is here. The lights have been installed, not quite as bright as the fluorescents..but I will get used to them. Then the major painting of the kitchen to fix the sloppy paint job that was in here. Fun in the sun! Tata for now! (Just remember any plans can change at any time! )

I say tear down the hood vent and the upper cabinets. Open things up.
