Black Mid Century Modern Nightstand Makeovers

When I approach a furniture makeover on mid century style furniture I try to enhance the original design. I previously made over the dresser that came with this set and it was time to update this little pair of nightstands, too.
Before they were dull looking, but they had legs that extended over the sides of the piece. I knew right away those needed to stand out and be stained as well as the wood framing around the drawers.
I began by unscrewing all parts of the nightstand so the legs, shelf, and box was separate and easier to work with. I stripped and sanded the legs and front frame so they were raw and ready for stain, and then used gel stain in a walnut color.

Next I had to do lots of prep. Video on how I prep here. There were scratches and dings all over the tops and sides of the nightstand frame. It require 3-4 round of filling and sanding to get it smooth and ready for primer and paint. These are made of solid elm which is almost as grainy as oak.

I primed, sanded smooth, and then used my HVLP spray gun to apply 2 coats of black paint, sanding in between coats. Next I sprayed on 2 thick coats of a satin topcoat to all parts of the nightstands.

The new two-tone look really accentuates the original design of these nightstands. The black isn't something always seen on mid century/modern furniture, but I'm glad I tried it out.

These are so cool. I would still use them as nightstands and would love to have them. Where did you get them and does anyone know where something similar is available?
