Basil - Easy to Grow and Wonderful in Salads.

Basil is very easy to grow and is unsurpassed for turning ordinary meals into masterpieces! It is also a wonderful herb to add straight into salads for a boost of flavor. And where would pesto be without it?
There is no substitute for fresh basil. It tastes so much better than the dried spices you can buy. Since it is such an easy plant to grown, there is no reason for not growing basil.
You can start with either small plants or with seeds, but seeds take longer of course, so starting them indoors before the last frost is a good idea.
If you grow in pots, be sure to have good drainage. Basil likes well drained soil. I have one large planter with several varieties of basil in it.
Be sure the plants get at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. Mine are on my deck in large planters and they get direct sunlight most hours of the day and do very well.
Water often when it is hot and dry.
Prune often and this especially includes the flowers (which are edible) If you allow basil to flower, it can turn bitter.
