Mystery Plant!!!

I saw this plant several months ago and was attracted to its vibrant color, saw it again today, it still had its red leaves and it had bloomed. I would like to have one like it but I dont know what it is. Can any one help me to identify it?

They are so beautiful when in bloom, look like powder puffs. I also like the bronze color of the leaves, they add a different contrast to the landscape.

smoke bush. I have one in this beautiful color and another in a blue/green. They can grow fairly large but can be pruned if you don't want them too big. I use my cuttings in floral arrangements.

Smoke Bush - I been thinking of getting one - How wide and tall do they get and about how wide and tall do you keep yours?

Sonia, smokebush needs some space as it grows 12 to 15 feet high and wide. "Daydream" is a more compact cultivar, but it does not get purple foliage, if that is what attracts you to the plant.

i agree with all posts. I have six in my yard, they need lots of room and should be pruned heavily each winter, to keep them from getting leggy. Also need to clean up water sprouts that emerge after pruning. Tolerates vey poor clay soil. Only water is summer drip in No. California. they are quite lovely, and the cool light frosts we get here in Nov. add to the brilliantly illuminated pinks, orange and purple color of the foliage.

we live in zone 5-6 and up until a few years go these were iffy in Northern Il but these days the plants are doing well. There are so many different varieties from purple to orangey to bright green.

I'd purchased a purple smoke bush 3 years ago & it is about 10 ft. high. I planted it where it can get lots of sun. When it was smaller the leaves were beautifully deep purple & now the leaves are mostly green & just a hint of purple. The blooms are very few & it doesn't have that smokey effect, hence the name "Purple Smoke Bush". I am a bit disappointed....I'd always wanted a smoke bush.

We have smokebush in our Memorial Garden at my church. What I've learned is that they need to be kept well watered. We have one bush that's not in the path of the sprinklers and it's not doing well. Also, every spring we cut it close to the ground. That keeps it coming up purple and contains overgrowth. RAF: try cutting it close this Spring and it may come back to the purple you love so much.

I have one of these "Smoke bushes" in my yard. My son planted it about 20 years ago. It is now the size of a medium size tree! every year it blooms, and looks like a big airy poof of pink feathers. Everyone loves it and there is at least one person a year that will stop by and ask what it is.

to Raf Fernandez....try pruning your smoke bush to get better color on new growth. Try the 1/3 Rule: take out 1/3 of the branches to around three feet from the ground. These should sprout new growth that will be brighter. Then next spring take down another 1/3 of the original branches to 2-3 feet. And then the third year prune down the last 1/3 of the original branches. Every two years give it a little pruning to rejuvenate the growth & bloom.
