My neighborhood has a big problem with mosquitos in the summer.

Darby C on Feb 23, 2011The only thing I know that works for mosquitos is Avon Skin so Soft. I don't know why, but it keeps them away. Make sure that you have all standing water drained from around your yard now, so that they won't come in the summer.Helpful Reply

Allison B on Feb 23, 2011Thanks Darby, we don't have any standing water in our yard, but I'm not sure about neighbors. We are going to look into foggers I think...Helpful Reply

Brent B on Feb 23, 2011Darby's right on with the Skin So Soft. Also, rubbing yourself with a dryer sheet works well. You might consider having a fogging service come by, Alison. They'll spray the perimeter of your property and all the problem areas. I'm not sure of the cost, but I've seen this method prove very effective, even in the swamps of central Florida.Helpful Reply

Allison B on Feb 23, 2011KMS, I can a bunch of my mosquitos off to you if you think you are missing out :) Thanks Brent, I'm definitely going to look into the fogging service. I have heard of people using that before an outdoor party with good results.Helpful Reply

3po3 on Feb 23, 2011Water is a huge part of mosquito control. If they don't have anywhere to live, they can't last. Get rid of standing water, that's the obvious one. Also make sure everyone's swimming pools are treated and circulating properly; keep the gutters cleared out; avoid dripping spigots and watch out for rain barrels or other seemingly harmless water sources.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Feb 24, 2011You can keep 'em...and save the money for other remediation efforts. Before moving to the mosquito free western high deserts...I lived in Michigan for 30 years...I know what a pest hey can be...Have you thought about a screened gazebo? or introducing swarms of mosquito eating birds?Helpful Reply

Hudson Designs on Feb 24, 2011Why not install Bat Box's. Bats love to munch on them. The average bat is capable of consuming over 1000 insects in a single hour. This means that each night, one bat will consume thousands of insects-including mosquitoes.Helpful Reply

Sara on Feb 24, 2011I have a river in back of me and a creek beside. I don't have a misquito prblm because we have bats! A bat box is simple tobuild and highly effective. Caution! Prepare your roof gable vents or you will have a bat problem instead of a misquito problem! LOL.Helpful Reply

Humphries Homes on Feb 26, 2011I have used the scotts mosquito control that you put on the end of you hose 2-3 times a summer and it seems to work really well. You just spray it on the lawn about midday and keep the kids and animals off for a while.Helpful Reply

James A on Feb 26, 2011I forgot one thing that really works, Let a cigarette soak in water overnight. Mix with lemon juice. Pour into a hose sprayer bottle (like a miracle grow bottle) spray all the trees and bushes before an event. Mosquitoes hate nicotine.Helpful Reply

Patsy W on Jul 13, 2011I have used Cutter with good results...just attach to hose and spray...lasts for about a month. Maybe you could get your neighbor a bottle too! I have heard the mosquito fans you wear work well too.Helpful Reply

American Maid Sisters on Jul 13, 2011I can concur with the bat house! We put one up in our backyard here in Kennesaw, Ga and even though I don't see bats flying around, it is obvious that they use their new home and we can see a huge difference in the mosquito population.Helpful Reply

58n58 on Jul 13, 2011I am not a big fan of chemicals, but after my kids getting shredded last year, we called a pest control company (Haynes Exterminating 678-264-1194, ask for Bill or Paul). they come once a month at a very reasonable price (any price is reasonable to not get eaten alive). We live in a very wooded area with a small creek on the property (mosquito heaven) and have been bite free all summer and enjoying Sunday cookouts. good luck.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Jul 13, 2011Any plant material that 'cups' water (such as English Ivy) is also a culprit for breeding havens for the mosquito. Adding airflow is also a benign way of making the area less desirable for the beasties. I have read that it is the lactic acid in our carbon dioxide fingerprint that attracts them to some folks and not others. I cannot attest to the accuracy of that information..lolHelpful Reply
