What is the "normal" cost for having a ceiling fan put in where there is an existing one now?

3po3 on May 23, 2012I'm always nervous about offering estimates for very different markets, but it seems to me that this should just be a one-hour service call, so it should be under $100. Of course, this assumes that all the wiring is in place and in good shape. That also doesn't include the cost of the fan and parts, etc.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on May 24, 2012A ceiling fan requires a "ceiling fan" rated electrical box...if using the basic octagonal type, this may or may not be already installed. I have installed some ceiling fans where complex cross blocking and heavy duty mounts are employed...it kind of depends on what was really there and what is being installed. I have done some in less than 30 min...others upwards of 2 hours. An 8 foot ceiling or 20 foot high over stairs.... given rates of "handyman" to full blown Electricians...you can also have a Hourly rate that can vary by a factor of three to four. Sorry I can't be more precise because these variables are unknown.Helpful Reply

HandyANDY - Handyman & All Repairs, LLC on May 24, 2012The cost really depends on the fan who made it and how difficult it is to assemble. HandyANDY typically charges $75 to 90...the electrical companies that advertise on tv will run from $150 to $300 for the same thing in our marketHelpful Reply

Lavish Electrical Services on Jul 26, 2014There are many Factors to consider before you can accurately price a project like this. 1) Is the existing fixture box and wiring compatible for installing a Ceiling Fan? 2) Will the fan be controlled by a single wall switch, remote or dual dimmer/fan speed control? 3) How high is the ceiling? 4) Is the area clear of furniture and other items that may hinder the installation. 5) Is the fan to be installed assembled and ready to be hung? In my professional experience a job like this can take anywhere from 1-2 hours depending on the circumstances of the project. Typically we would charge a minimum of $200.00 to come out and change a ceiling fan if the conditions are optimal. It can cost up to $400.00 if additional work is to be done to make the installation SAFE and to code. Please remember to use reputable , licensed and insured contractors to protect your home and family. An improperly installed fan can start a fire or fall from the ceiling and cause injuries to you and your family.Helpful Reply
