Sealing a new untreated Welcome Post

I bought a new "welcome" post with a hanging "bench seat" that I can put a plant in the seat or just put bird seed, since at the top of the post is a bird house, haven't decided which I will do,

Anyway; I have a question, I want to treat it with a waterproof stain or shalac (sp) so it will take the weather of South Georgia, too much sun, heat or too much humidity, and also, the bugs that I'm sure will attack the wood as soon as I put it in the ground.....ANY SUGGESTIONS for the BEST WATERPROOFING/WEATHER PROOFING and BUG PROOFING :)))).....??????? the picture that is posted looks like the wood on my birdhouse/post.....

Jean can you include a photo of the whole thing. I know there are some paint/deck experts here on Hometalk who can help you, but it would help to have a better idea of what you are talking about.

Because this could be some future home to a family of birds...I would go with a 0 VOC deck product like Penofin's Verde...and limit it application to the outside only.

Sikkens is a top-of-the-line stain for exterior wood.

Be prepared to pay $80.+/gal. but the value is there.

@PPC - gosh Charles, does this not come in something way smaller, like pint or qt. size or something??? Sounds like a great product but a gal. would last most of us a lifetime for stuff like this???

There are no quarts in serious exterior stain products because they would not sell enough of them to justify production. Ideally, Jean would need the stain for something else as well. For a birdhouse, most any thing could do. Most exterior stains need redoing about every year. The Sikkens would give you 3 years.

The penofin Verde is available in small "sample tubes" 2 or 3 of these would be enough to treat the outside of that bird house. ...In my neighborhood the gallons of verde run about $64.
