Buttons not deep down enough

Please can someone help? This button upholstery is causing me so much grief but I'm determined to learn to get it right. I've managed to cover buttons with material but the self cover buttons were dredfull for thicker material. I have pulled the buttons through but can not get the thread tight enough to make the button sink into the front. Please can someone give me some pointers.
You can see some are not deep enough. How do I tighten thread??

Here are a few Youtube videos to help you out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a-9rQMfgMA
  • Not sure if you have a wood panel underneath the upholstery, but if you do and it's thick enough you can actually use small screws and washers, then glue the button on afterward.

The button should be the type with a shank on the back. You need to hook your upholstery thread though that shank and then pull the button taut and tie it off on the backside of the piece.

I do the tufting first then sew in the buttons in the dimple.

shank buttons heavy thread doubled bring thread from back through shank back down to back. have someone push the button from front or if you can do it no help needed. theres always wood around the edge, staple thread tight with 3 or 4 staples

You do say in the beginning of the post you can't get the thread tight enough to make the buttons sink into the front but if tightness of thread is not your problem perhaps there needs to be more batting/padding under the material to give more depth for the buttons to sink into.

I was going to say the same thing Katrina said. It might just be an illusion. You can only pull that thread so taut and if there isn't enough poofiness, you can't fix it. Actually, I think it looks just fine.

Thank you have had some useful tips and I think the poofiness was a cause and the rubbish buttons. Will be re doing. I'm determined to get it right lol
