Frogs are too noisy

Walter Reeves on Jun 08, 2012A visitor recently mentioned how loud my frogs were. Not much can be done about them except importing a few rat snakes....but most people don't take that option.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Jun 08, 2012Well I don't have to worry about importing because my yard has snakes and other critters. I wouldn't mind the frog noise except it starts about 1 a.m. and lasts until daybreak. I wouldn't mind them much later in the day.Helpful Reply

Lou B on Jun 08, 2012They leave the ponds at daylight and hide somewhere close....you might try to find them and relocate to another pond in the country. Lights have never bothered the ones in my pond.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Jun 08, 2012LouB, thank you for the answer. I haven't seen one in my koi pond, I only hear the terrible noises at night. Tonight I will go to the pond before dark to see who they are. Then I will put up with it until they lose their voices. Hopefully soon.Helpful Reply

Becky H on Jun 08, 2012The sound of the raindrops becomes their mating call. Every time it rains the noise by our pond becomes deafening. I have found some in the pond the next morning, and have been known to net them and transfer them to our nearby lake. That by no means guarantees quiet. More come. Oh well, I suppose we'll have plenty of help w/mosquitoes brought on by the rain. Have to look at it in a positive light.Helpful Reply

Barb A on Jun 09, 2012I may not of the norm here, I love the sound of the frogs after a good rain, I call it listening to the "frog orchestra"Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Jun 09, 2012I guess the first night was a reunion of every frog in my HOA possibly because it finally was raining after terrible drought. Becky H, it didn't rain last night & it was pleasant frog singing. All these years with wildlife & I knew nothing about the rain. Great wildlife person, huh? Well I learn something every day.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Jun 09, 2012This reminds me of a "tree frog" story. When I was in grad school I got to attend a tropical ecology course in Puerto Rico one year, down there they have a small tree frog call the coqui. For its size this thing can really make some noise. After a few sleepless nights one of my fellow students took matters into her own hands....there was one singing frog that hung out on the exterior wall just outside her room...about 2am we heard a "take that you $%$." and then a loud bang...then silence. next morning we found out the little frog meet an early demise from the heal of this gals boot....The irony is she was one of the quietest and sweetest nature loving type of gals you ever would have meet...I guess the moral is everyone has a breaking point.Helpful Reply

Becky H on Jun 09, 2012Both Sherrie and I can attest to the fact that the mating calls and trilling of toads and frogs is far different from listening to the "frog orchestra". I think all people love to hear a froggie from time to time; in my case, every night is fine. But, think "Toads and Frogs on Crack" and then you'll have some idea of what we're describing. I've had my pond long enough now to expect and overlook the decibal level they attain; we close all windows and doors and make sure the A/C is running to muffle the sounds. On the other hand, I've found owls in the lawn enjoying the fruits of the rainfall too. So, that's always fun to watch. It's just a total ecosystem.Helpful Reply

Lou B on Jun 09, 2012Sherry, the best time to catch them is in the am around 6 to 7...a couple of days ago, when it was cloudy, around 7:30am I counted 2 tree frogs and 4 toads leaving my pond...they are so loud at night I have to turn up the TV to drown the noise out....if you look in the toy dept. at walmart...you might be able to find a small net(that is where I found mine)..this is perfect to use for catching them.Helpful Reply

Jean M on Jun 09, 2012I'm sorry, LOL, LOL, LOL, my sister started a pond like yours near her house, and her kids complained about the "frogs" outside their bedroom window...never ending "singing" (that's a nice way to put it")....My sister didn't have "lights" on or off, so I don't know if turning lights on or off would help. ...sorry :(....Helpful Reply

Marie B on Jun 10, 2012Nope, they mate for about 3 days and our pond is right outside our bedroom window so we move to our guest room untill they decide to leave. Seems to be worse when we get a lot of rain.Helpful Reply

Marie B on Jun 10, 2012And no, lights don't make a big difference either. We get them about 3 times a year.Helpful Reply

Sherrie Slaboda on May 06, 2015@Susan murphy I try to keep my yard as natural as possible. I would never spray bug spray around my Koi pond no matter how loud a group of frogs sing. Also keep in mind that they eat bugs and that is good. Since I have three water features I do have a lot of frogs.Helpful Reply
