Perfect Carrot Spacing With Homemade Seed Tape
by

Fact: carrot seeds are impossibly tiny. This makes them ridiculously hard to plant with the proper spacing, resulting in the mess you see above. (I refuse to believe this has anything to do with my nearly-40-year-old eyes.)
Fact: one can buy seeds, spaced properly, that are attached to biodegradable paper. This is called seed tape, and it increases your seed cost exponentially–the price of convenience.
Fact: Mama is too cheap to pay for something she can make herself.
So here we are.
All you need is a few squares of TP, a spray bottle with water, and your seeds!

Carol Collins on Nov 14, 2013I was fortunate enough to have a lady mentor me when I first started gardening as a young bride. One of the things she would do in the late winter with her grandkids was prepare seed tapes for the smallest seeds in the garden. She would get the cheap two ply toilet paper and line it up on the table, seperate the plys and dampen it with the spray bottle; then she and the grandkids would line and space the seeds to how she liked them and replace the second ply. The dampness would dry and stick the plys back together. They would then roll it up and put it into a labled tp roll ready for spring planting. (she also would put a wide plank on top of the planted damp seeds until they germinated. Once germinated she flipped it over and used it to walk on and control weeds between rows) I miss her, she was one wise woman.
