Can refurbished vintage wood re-stained to a darker color?

I have pallet wood that I put boiled linseed oil on. Now I want to stain this wood with Minwax water based American Walnut (color) wood stain. Willl this work? Any suggestions. The wood is orig. pine...only trmt is the boiled linseed oil and lots of sanding. Thank you for any advice!

Linseed Oil is generally used to seal the wood, so you might have some problems with it taking a dark stain. I would try a test piece to see what happens since you sanded.

I would use oil based stain. Linseed oil penetrates into the wood and you'd have to sand pretty far down to get rid of it. Oil & water are not that compatible. Linseed oil is a finish, not a sealer or protectant . the rule of thumb with linseed oil is once a day for a week, once a week for a year, once a year.

water based over the oil is not going to work, some light sanding (220 grit) then follow with some oil based minwax. I would then let is dry for a few days them repeat...and let that dry for a few days. Then you will want to topcoat to seal the color in. For that I would use minwaxs wiping poly. This come is satin or gloss and is very easy to apply. I normally use 3 or 4 coats with a 320 grit rubdowm before the final coat.
