There are water based "poly" and oil based "poly"...Poly is the short name for polyurethane. It refers to the "resin" component. They can be found in many type...brush on, spray one wipe on...and in sheens from gloss to satin.

If you want to use it on furniture, be aware that oil based poly will yellow where water based won't. I found that out the hard way.

@Elaine Simmons I have been using minwax's wiping poly for many many years without any "yellowing" of the finish.

@Elaine Simmons The "wiping poly" is ONLY available as an oil based product. One reason I love it so much is by using a small 3" square of "t-shirt type" rag as the applicator there are no brushes to clean. I apply it wearing some thin disposable nitrile medical type gloves...you do not want to use the latex gloves as they soften in "oil" environments.

I agree that wiping poly is easier to apply, but the fact remains, it DOES yellow! I know because I used the water based on a vanity that I had made from a dresser. It was on about a year and I thought maybe I should put another coat on since it got so much water on it. I grabbed the can of oil base and applied it just to the top of the vanity and walked away for about an hour.........when I came back, it was already yellow..........had to scrape it off because it looked really bad and did not match the rest of the vanity

@Elaine Simmons It is not perfectly clear, nor does it have the milky look of water based products...when applied to very whitish wood is does add some color, as will any OIL based product when first applied...but when folks talk about yellowing they normally refer to the long term effects of traditional varnish...as they will CONTINUE to yellow over time. In my 30 plus years of woodworking and 15 years of using the wiping poly I have not noticed any additional yellowing over time.

Well it did it for me......I wish I had pictures.......it didn't just give a hint of amber but was VERY yellow. Anything I have ever read online and the paint stores that I have worked in will tell you the same thing........oil based yellows!
