Share your favorite sources for fall-planted bulbs

In many parts of the country, it's prime planting time for the bulbs (and corms and tubers and rhizomes) that bring us daffodils and tulips and crocus and allium and many other manner of spring beauty. (A good signal is when you've had a killing frost or two; ideally the soil temperature should be about 55 degrees). But if you haven't already gotten your order in, don't worry, there's still plenty of time, and as the season goes on many suppliers mark down prices on remaining inventory. To help you decide who to order from, I'm asking Hometalk members to share their experience here.
I myself have planted thousands of bulbs, and when I lived in the Hudson Valley, my go-to sources were John Scheepers (www.johnscheepers.com) and Brent and Becky's Bulbs (www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com). I've also ordered some species crocus from White Flower Farm (www.whiteflowerfarm.com). This year I have ordered from two companies new to me as I am sourcing bulbs that—fingers crossed—will do well in Florida. They are Old House Gardens (www.oldhousegardens.com), which specializes in heirloom bulbs, and The Southern Bulb Company (www.southernbulbs.com). I'm expecting those deliveries late this month or in early November.
Please join the conversation and share your sources.

  • When I think of Florida, you don't think of bulbs! I have family above you in Jacksonville and I have to laugh when they it gets cold in the winter. I guess once your blood thins-out, anything below 60 is freezing. Thanks for the tips.....I've been meaning to do this for years. This will get me motivated.

For lily bulbs, B&D Lilies in WA state sends the biggest bulbs of all. You won't be disappointed. Schreiners Iris in Oregon is great for iris and Swan Island Dahlia in OR is awesome and sends great stuff.
  • Have always had good luck with Colorblends. http://www.colorblends.com/ Large healthy bulbs.
