You could hang them along the edge of the entire ceiling and around the door frame. If you want to do something fancier, you could wrap lights around a cheap garland (from the dollar store even) and then add some "decor" to the garland like deco mesh, ribbons and ornaments. You could make garland themed to school colors, a certain sport, special interests, etc. You could find a little tree and decorate that with lights too. Otherwise, you could do crafts with lights such as a diy apothecary jar, lighted canvas pictures, glass blocks with lights inside. Hope that helps!
I put them across the window and I bought some battery operated lights and push pinned them to a wall with a pretty winter picture, I also hung decorations from the ceiling using ribbon and thumbtacks and put a believe banner across the window with decorations hanging
