What is the best top-coat for a dining room table?

I am painting my dining room table and benches. I didn't sand the furniture prior to painting. I did apply one coat of primer to all the pieces. After priming, I applied one coat of satin cream latex paint +primer that is supposed to be washable. I am then going to apply two coats of the same type of paint in a country blue color. When those final coats dry, I plan on distressing the furniture. What would be the best top coat to place on the table to protect the paint job?

Depending on the look you're going for... either varnish or wax will work.

@Andria Sorry. Polyurethane is the fast drying clear coat that I apply to a lot of projects. Wax can be used to protect your paint job, but can't be scrubbed. And if it's high traffic will have to be re applied from time to time.

since its a Dining room table, I would use several coats of Polycrylic on it...it needs to be very washable....if you want it very shiny, sand lightly between each coat....I'm doing mine now too :)

i would use satin polyurethane and definitely lightly sand with very fine sand paper between each coat. I just did a dining room table and put on 4 coats of poly. Plan on it lasting a long time

I sanded and then rubbed in several coats of flaxseed oil - worked really well, took water spots right out and made the oak really shine.

@Sonia M Wouldn't that be something you would use on unpainted wood?

I believe I will be using the polyurethane or Polycrylic. I haven't sanded between coats. I will be sanding in the end, because I am sanding some of the paint off. :)

Thanks, everyone. I purchased the Polycrylic and will be using that on my project!
