Give New Life To An Old Table With A Map

This table was pretty boring but now it has a vintage feel. I used an old map of our state to add some interest to the top and inside the drawer.
This is how the table looked before.
I got this table at a flea market for about $7. It was in good shape but definitely needed some love on the outside. I sanded the top because there were some rough spots. Once that was done I used Fusion Lamp White paint and Home Decor Chalk Paint Cascade for the teal areas. I love this color. I had used it before on this beachy sofa table and it was so pretty. The paint needed a good two coats. I had retrieved an old Iowa map out of the dumpster at work. It was just sitting right on top. It was torn and somewhat wrinkled but I took it home anyway. It sat in the garage for a while but this seemed like the perfect opportunity to use it.
I cut out the areas I wanted to use. I put my county and the surrounding counties on the top. And in the drawer I used an area of the state where my kids live. It was just a fun way to use the map. The Mod Podge worked great for adhering the map. There were a lot of wrinkles and air bubbles at first but eventually they went down. It does look like such a mess when you first do it but if you are patient it does look better after some time. When it was dry I used a brown gel over the top of the entire table and drawer. I repainted the original drawer pulls. I happened to have some spray paint that worked well and then added a little of the gel to give them an old look too.
I think it turned out nice!

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Did you sand it after you painted it to give it a rustic look?
You did a great job! Thank you for the tip about how to give an aged look to decoupaged paper. I was not aware of that method.
I'd like to try this and have a question. What exactly did you use to put over the map to keep the map clean from damage. secobdly did you add the molding on the top sides. Many thanks, and great looking table..
