Lightly sand to remove any shine. Spray paint with Rustoleum or Krylon paint made for metal.
Yes you need to lightly sand as William stated. Make sure you use painters tape to block out any areas you do not wish to paint and make sure the surface is free of dirt and dust. Proceed to spray paint in two light coats allowing to totally dry in-between.

Metal Cabinet? Don't Toss It! Turn It Into Something Useful
i love using spray paint. It makes for such a smooth finish with no brush strokes. If it's a big table invest in one of those plastic guns that fits over your spray paint can. It will save your pointer finger from holding down the spray button.
Rustoleum also has a newer paint line called Hammered Metals that gives a nice matte textured looking finish.
