  • What are you wrapping? That might help us to give you ideas. If the item(s) fit into a xerox paper or similar size box, I would make a train by attaching a few boxes together and either mod podge the boxes, or paint them. See what you have around your house that may work, boxes, tins, plastic containers.

Depending on the size of the package you can use scrapbook paper which comes in a lot of children prints.

If he's only five, chances are he won't care what it's wrapped in! Depending on what the gift is, you can do the box within a box within a box, wrapping each one inside the other. As always, a gift bag with lots of scrunched up colored tissue paper is also fun for kids to dig through.

I like the idea of the box inside of eachother. The one thing i would add to that is using the COMIC newspaper. Kids love that.

For young children I like to buy a fun pillowcase and wrap their gift in that. You can fold it under and tie it up with ribbon. Then they get a double gift and it's better for the environment (less waste).

Buy some less expensive items for him than the big gift and put one thing in two or three boxes, each box larger than the one before. Lots of tissue makes him look for the gift and enhances the search. Finally, he will get to the bigger box and the special gift. Wrap them all in the Sunday comics with colorful ribbon. My grandchildren all loved the scavenger hunt for their birthday gift, but they had to take them from small to big.

Use brown kraft paper, like that used for mailing package. Put a ribbon around it and use glue gun to fasten lollipops, gum, or individually wrapped candies to it, making a design, such as spelling his name.
