4 Great Chalk Paint Techniques for Carved Surfaces
The most important thing is to make sure you start with a clean surface! (Even though you don't need to sand with chalk paint, no paint will stick to an unclean surface.)
I clean my furniture with 50/50 water and white vinegar, and a few drops of blue Dawn detergent for extra grimy pieces. After cleaning, rinse very well and allow to dry.
Also- chalk paint dries very fast, so you need to move quickly. Once you are done painting, you'll need to seal the finish with a topcoat, which will differ depending on the brand you choose.
Good luck!
