Follow their trail. Find the entrance to their nest. Pour gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid in. Toss a match, step back. The fumes and fire will reach all the tunnels and other openings. Gone. Nothing else will be harmed but the ant colony.

Easy Solution to Kill Ant Piles - Club Soda!
borax
I put Bimbo white loaf bread pieces along their trail and around their nest, small pieces that they can carry. Inside their nest, they have a "garden" where they bring "food" NOT to eat but to feed their garden which grows the mold that is their food. The bread has so much anti-mold chemicals in it that it eventually kills their "garden". Works for most ants, leaf-cutters and other gremlins that have "gardens" in their nest.
I used to spinkle powdered laundry detergent on the ant hill every time I saw one. That was before I learned about borax. I don't think I ever got rid of all of them.
