The towel bars in bathrooms

We want to remove the towel bars from the wall - but the last time I tried removing one in our old house - i ended with a big hole that I had to repair the drywall - - got an easier idea for me - got an old thrift store self standing white shelf to put there - thanks in advance for any help you can give - -- Sandy Mae aka "Sandra" Gunderson

They usually have a very small screw on the bottom. If you loosen it they come off.

Most of them just unscrew from the wall.
