I want an arbor with attached planters for my entryway. Any ideas?

I grow Mandevillas each year on the steps of my entryway. They are beautiful but rather than just have them on trellises, I'd rather have them growing up and over an arbor but they are very expensive - especially with attached planters. Anyone have any ideas to keep costs down?

    How about building one?

I wish I would have built something like that when my kids were little. They would have loved sitting under that arbor and pulling off the veggies and eating them (stringbeans, cucumbers, etc). Funny how kids don't like vegetables until they grow them in their own garden. I'll have to pass this on to my friends with young kids. Thanks for the idea!

Check your local HD or Lowes for their display units. You may be able to build your own with pvc piping. Lots of options. Best of luck.

Thanks for reminding me about the PVC piping....I'm a big fan of it. I have used it many times for windows requiring very long curtain rods. Nice to pay a few dollars vs a few hundred for something that no one really sees because it is covered by curtains.

I'll have to try and draw up some plans for an arbor. Thanks for your help. Happy Gardening!

I built one out of two large rectangular planting boxes, could also use 1/2 barrels, then I got 3 - 10' tall x 2' bamboo panels at bi-mart. We painted these with epoxy white marine paint. I put 1 in each pot along walkway, and filled with gravel and potting soil, leveled and drilled hole and bolted to side, then one was attached to the top across the walkway using soaked bambo lashing.

The lady I did this for put clematis vine in the pots which grew over the trellis.

Another option would be to use white resin trellises or lattice.

If you have your heart set on an arch over the top, try 1" pvc pipe that will fit over the bamboo ends, cut a bit longer than the distance across and it should arch up when you force it into or over bamboo ends; or some old tent poles.

I use thin strips of old pantyhose to tie vines onto the fencing to train it where I want it to go.
