Hostas are a relatively easy to grow plant that need little maintenance. They are shade tolerant but do best with morning sun and afternoon shade. Cut back your hostas after a good frost and compost in spring. They can be divided after 3 or 4 years of growth. They like a rich soil with a slightly acidic PH. Slugs like hosta so slight sprinkle of sand around them should help in keeping them away. Other than that they are relatively care free.

definitely love shade!! we planted one hosta in the back of our yard and we never have to tend to it, it has a tree above for some shading and gets a bit of sun mid day, they like the shade. we only water it when the season has been dry

plus that one plant has expanded and covers a large area now

I agree with all the above. I have many hostas, both new and really old. I make sure to keep new plantings watered well so they thrive. The older ones seem to do fine with just rain water, but I do water if we have a long dry spell. Hostas are a plant that seems to thrive on neglect.
