I had been wanting to make a marquee sign for a wile. I want one that spelled out BAR. I thought I would start with someone more simple like an arrow.
The first thing I did was to draw out the shape I wanted onto some paper. I could then cut this out to make a template.
I draw around the template on to some plywood.
I took the plywood over to the bandsaw and cut out the arrow shape.
I used a steel rule 1” wide to draw a line 1” from the edge all the way around the arrow. I then marked out where I wanted the bulbs to go.
I could then drill all the holes out for the bulbs.
I gave it all a sand down and then a coat of primer.
I gave it two coats of red and then a few coats of clear lacquer.
The bulb holders need a little persuasion to get into the holes. I used some hot glue to secure them.
To edge the sign I got some 3mm thick aluminium. I cut this down to 100mm wide strips.
The aluminium could then get folded and moulded around the form of the arrow.
It got held in place by some self tapping screws.
I added some extra pieces of wood to the front and back for added support.
The last job was to screw in all the bulbs.
