Hi Stacy, yum yum yum, I LOVE eating basil and it even tastes good with spiciness on it :) Bugs, however, don't care too much for spicy, which is why I've used hot pepper spray on mine with pretty good success ... here is a weblink that gives you some solutions. Good luck and thank you for using Hometalk :)

Spraying soapy water on the leaves is a great bug deterrent, and is safe!
Hello Stacy; As Katty previously stated, Bugs do not like Spicy things.
I use a nasty mixture of a hot pepper spray on my edible herbs and other plants.
Here is what I use.
Two heads of Garlic.
Eight hot cayenne peppers.
4 Tablespoons of olive oil.
3 Tablespoon Liquid Dawn Soap.
5 cups hot water
I hope that this helps you!!!! My bugs have left my yard, and are eating Dinner elsewhere!!!!! Take Care!
Horticulture or neem oil will work ,reapply as necessary
Try cat mint or regular mint. You can also make a mint spray. Check the web to see how.
Try planting some peppermint in a pot near it. Also you can sprinkle red pepper flakes around it.
