How about fabric soaked in watered down Elmers? Really can make some beautiful boxes. I also have used tissue paper of many colors. The colors tend to blend and that looks pretty. Let your imagination run away with it! Have fun!

you can Modge Podge pieces of fabric, wrapping paper, newspaper or sheets of music to match decor of your room.
You could look for a pretty fabric to use, or depending upon your artistic talents, burn a picture (stencil) on it
If the wood is in good condition, why cover it at all? If not, sand and stain it, or stencil something on it.
