I love the galvanized pumpkins I see for sale everywhere, but what I don’t love is the big price tag. I’ve seen them upwards of $30 a piece, which is pretty pricey for seasonal decor. Can you believe these cost me a whole $3 to make? The $3 is for the two pumpkins and the bag of leaves (I already had the spray paint and wire on hand). That’s only $1 and pennies for each pumpkin!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Dollar store styrofoam pumpkins
- Dollar store faux maple leaves
- Wire (I used copper wire but any wire that you can easily bend by hand will do)
- Wire cutters
- Rust-Oleum Metallic spray paint in Dark Copper where to buy
- Rust-Oleum Hammered spray paint in Silver where to buy
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Remove the plastic stems from the styrofoam pumpkins.
Spray paint one side of the pumpkins with the silver paint. Spray paint one side of the stems and a couple leaves with the dark copper spray paint. Allow to dry thoroughly, then turn everything over and repeat on the other side.
Wrap some wire loosely around a pencil to make it “curly.” I say loosely because if you wind it too tight, you’ll have a heck of a time getting it off of the pencil, like I did the first time I did it.
Trim the wire to the length desired, then spray paint one side with the dark copper paint, allow to dry thoroughly, then spray paint the other side.
Once everything is thoroughly dry, re-attach the stems to the pumpkins. Attach a leaf to the top of the pumpkin using hot glue. Attach the curly wire by sticking one end into the pumpkin near the stem.
That’s all there is to it! It doesn’t get any easier (or cheaper) than this, but they certainly don’t look cheap!

Did you have any problems with the spray paint damaging the styrofoam pumpkin.
