How do I design my backyard for plants, flowers and trees?

We have about twenty lodge pole pines and hardwoods that shade about 60% of our back yard. We love plants, trees and flowers and want a plan to work on throughout the years. How do I best plan and then execute the plan so that in 5 years we have little to maintain (we are getting older)?

Ny suggestion is to go through gardening websites first to get a idea of what will work in your zone. Basically there is not much offered with no maintenance. All gardens regardless of what is planted will always need attending to.

One thing to remember when planting under pines is their needles create acid soil, so pick acid-loving plants.

Call in a Landscape Designer who will be able to not only give you a plan but will also give you a planting plan and a plant list. They will give you a plan to suit your requirements.

Hostas are low maintenance, they love shade and produce some nice flowers! They also multiply on their own, but don't become out of control!
