How to make my open wall and make empty space into a book case

We seem to have a space in our bedroom that juts out. I am guessing it was necessary in order to match up our closet with the closet of the room next door, but not sure. If empty I want to open for a bookshelf. I can just put wood between the two by fours if it works and then molding around edges.

Are you sure that isn't where the closet is in the room next door? If not, it sounds like a good idea!

Usually there's a reason for a wall to protrude like that. It's either the back of a closet or there's something in the wall, pipes, conduit etc. If you have a basement or a floor above try to figure out what the space is used for. Make some measurements. Most builders wouldn't give up floor space just to even out a wall. You don't want to take down the wall only to have to put it up again. If it is an empty pocket the shelves are a great idea. I'd look around to see if there were any more spots wasted!

Here's a good tutorial. i would first cut an exploratory hole and shine a flashlight in there to make sure there are not pipes etc. Its easier to cover back up if there is pipes in wall. If you good to go, draw your lines and get your drywall saw and go to town. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvsX0kvjPoA
