I would get two tall matching vases for either side, or two tall thin plants. Then maybe do a gallery wall above the TV with a mix of framed photos and wall decor.
If it were me, I would hang the tv on the wall. Then place tall items on either side, in an odd number and not matching but coordinating. If you feel the need to fill the wall space above, a nice wreath or cool art piece would look great.

I agree with hanging the tv on the wall. I think it would have a more finished look, no matter what you decided to put on the mantle
I third hanging it on the wall, that way you can use the bottom area more
