I spilled this broth on a hot burner, and need to clean it without scratching the surface. Ideas, other than baking soda?
Hello Pmacdon30, I DO have an idea; one that I KNOW will work, but you may not want to try it because it STINKS. The way they did it in the "olden days" when I was a little girl was with AMMONIA (the same thing they used to clean out their dirty, grease scorched ovens). You will need to heat up your stockpot, filling it with water until you've covered the scorched areas, and let it simmer a little while. Then add ammonia and don't be shy about it (make sure you take a deep breath of "fresh" air first and avert your eyes because this is going to sting them if you look into the pot). Now cover your pot with a lid and let it sit overnight. Remove lid and dump the mess down the sink keeping your face turned away as much as possible. The scorched on blackberries should come off without too much effort. If you use a steel wool pad and scratch up the stockpot it will only ensure more stuck on foods in the future so try using a wooden spoon or plastic mesh to scrub off the burnt food in the pot. Good Luck and thanks for using HOMETALK for answers :)
I used to work in an office where I made the coffee and others would turn the pot off later. Once they didn't do that. I tried everything, and finally soaked it in a can of Coke. I mean poured the Coke into it, and let it soak overnight. That worked, and didn't smell.
Hi, Here's a link that may help: https://www.thriftyfun.com/tf75810427.tip.html
Good luck!
I have a different memory of the 'old fashioned' way. I learned this from my mother. If something stuck to the pot, she would put water and dishwashing soap in the pot (it doesn't need to be a lot of water) and slowly heat it to a slow boil. Watch it at this point because it can easily over flow with bubbles but you want it to boil a bit so it lifts the mess on the bottom.. Like other 'old fashioned' ways, turn you face away from the steam. Let it slow boil for 5-10 min. depending on how it's going. Turn off the heat and let it cool. I usually then take a metal spatula and run it across the bottom of the pot to make sure it's loosened up. Empty it and assess the situation. With luck you'll be able to clean the rest of it all up easily. If there are a couple of spots, use an SOS or Brillo pad to clean them up. If need be, you can repeat the process to loosen what is left.
Best of luck to you.
Add a few inches of water…Dawn dish soap … and a dryer sheet like Bounce or whatever brand you use. Let sit for One hour and rinse clean. No scrubbing required.
