Large sliding barn door (outside)
We want to install one large sliding door on our barn. The barn opening is 7' high and 8' across. My husband will make the actual door but we need ideas for the hardware. To buy it outright would be expensive. Any ideas on how to do it ourselves to save some money?Thank you!

Z on Mar 19, 2014Here's some instructions I found via a Google search: http://www.epbot.com/2013/03/make-your-own-sliding-barn-door-for.html http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-sliding-barn-doors-using-skateboard-wheels/?ALLSTEPS And another using premade hardware from Tractor Supply that seemed pretty reasonable for the work it saves bending the metals in the other two links. http://www.myrepurposedlife.com/2012/06/tractor-supply-barn-door-hardware.htmlHelpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Mar 20, 2014I would bite the bullet on the hardware and purchase the correct stuff for the door. It will be very heavy and they are difficult even with the good stuff to open and close when the weather gets bad. By the time and effort it would take to make something you would have had the job done and be using it. Also any hanging doors need a track that is protects the rollers from debris. I have seen those with a round bar and rollers laying on top, and they tend to fail and fall off all the time. Check out tractor supply they normally have pretty good prices on this stuff.Helpful Reply

Julie on Mar 20, 2014Thank you so much for the advice and help. Great point, Woodbridge E., about protecting the rollers from debris --we have a lot of trees and I'm certain we'd have a problem if we didn't cover the rollers. Didn't think that part through, so thanks!Helpful Reply
