Love the Look of the Barberry Hedge, but Scared to Prune Them?
by
The Good Service
(IC: professional)
Yearly pruning helps barberry shrubs grow into more dense, bushy shapes. These plants have thorns and colorful foliage making them not only attractive in a landscape but also an effective physical barrier. These plants can be grown as part of foundation planting, mass planting, or as hedges. They can be pruned into uniform shapes andhedges, or trimmed to follow its natural growth.

Douglas Hunt on Apr 08, 2014I'm not sure what the situation is in Maryland, but Japanese barberry is an invasive threat in many areas, and the Plant Conservation Alliance's Alien Plant Working Group comes right out and says, "Do not plant Japanese barberry." http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/beth1.htm
