Our city is renowned for our outdoor staircases
Some curve beautifully
Some are angled
and some are straight
There are several theories on why they were implemented
Another being that the Clergy wanted them - to deter adultery LMHO - because you would be seen by everyone slinking into someone's house !!!

Actually, that outdoor stairway had been there over 100 years too, at least by this point anyway - it was my great-parent's house. My two maiden great aunts lived in it until they died. The one who broke her hip twice lived into her 90's.
