When we moved into our 1960's home the powder room was covered in fake plastic paneling and plywood coated with yellowed wallpaper glue. Oh, and there was brown shag carpeting.
It was bad.
It was bad.
We covered the cinder block basement walls with beadboard all the way up to the ceiling, bought a new sink from Craigslist, and found a great mirror at the Pottery Barn outlet for $200 less than the catalog price just because it was missing one screw (which was easily replaced with a trip to the Home Improvement store).
We also updated the plumbing and added an electrical outlet because previously this room didn't even have one.
We tore out the carpet (which was glued to a cement floor) and installed vinyl flooring.
The makeover took several months because I was pregnant with our third child and my husband was studying for his PE (Professional Engineering) exam. We did all of the work ourselves. The total cost came in at around $900.
