Trying to repurpose/up-purpose for new kitchen

Have you done a totally new kitchen with recycled/repurposed/reused materials? What problems did you encounter?
The tiny kitchen with five (count'em, 5!) doors leading to the rest of our house has to go. With about a foot and a half of counter space available, something has to give and it isn't going to be my patience. Well, not yet at least.
After 6 grueling months of stating the pros and cons, I finally convinced Hubster that turning the dining room (10'x15') into a kitchen and the old kitchen (many doors, about 8'x12' and little cabinet space) into a den/reading room. The doors lead to the living room, basement, current dining room, sun-porch (and outside), and a small pantry/bathroom. I've hated having to put our fridge in the pantry and hate having a bathroom that close to the kitchen.
We have a floor plan but have some decisions to make about floor (keep oak or cover it) treatments and whether to keep our appliances--I cook on a 1942 Chambers, which I love--or get new ones. I want to repurpose cabinets and other items we have or need to find; he wants to work with only new materials.
Have you done a kitchen from scratch? Any tips or hints? Am I crazy or is he?

@Z Sorry for being late in commenting...been going back and forth on the kitchen. As to using the current space: my friendly designer friend grinned painfully and patted me on the shoulder, saying "It's beyond help." The dining room (proposed new kitchen) has direct access to grey water plumbing, fresh water plumbing, and venting as well as gas lines, all of which I'm heartily glad. The ceiling and one wall are already down to the studs due to a water leak from the upstairs bathroom, so husband has already run new power lines (both upstairs and 1st floor). He's a handy guy.

@Patricia W I love HH Restore! True, you don't find what you want all the time, but with some diligence and effort you eventually get what you need.

I agree with your husband, if you are going to re-do the kitchen use new cabinets and countertops, don't replace your appliances if they still work.

@AByron It looks like we're keeping the fridge--it's less than 5 years old and still in great shape--but the 1942 Chambers stove is regretfully going to replace. We had a gas leak recently, and if not for our German Shepherd waking me up, husband would have to replace wife as well.
