Annie Sloan paint appears a different colour!

HELP!!! This one is really for anyone who uses a lot of Annie Sloan paint for larger projects. I painted a kitchen for a client who wanted it in Annie Sloan Paris Grey, I explained that it was more of a rustic handpainted finish and she was fine with that. However we decided to varnish it and although she was shown a sample cupboard door and okayed it, she then changed her mind because it altered the colour. Since then I have repainted every single cupboard etc in two coats of Paris Grey and finished with a specialist neutral flat matt decorator's varnish, I even mixed a 50/50 of paint and varnish as a top coat to get the colour as close as possible to the original. She is now claiming that the colour of the top cabinets does not match the bottom, in fact she has accused me of using 3 different colours! I have tried explaining that this paint can look different depending on the light (she lives in an old cottage) but she won't listen. I made a sample board of the mix I used and some Paris Grey straight from the tin and there is NO difference, all the units have been painted EXACTLY the same. Has anyone had a similar experience or noticed ASCP appearing different according to location? She is getting really nasty now and I need some back up!!!

  • I think I would contact the Annie Sloan company for back up on this one. Best of luck to you. :/

Has she paid you? If she has put that money in the bank in escrow have your bank help you set it up. This shows good faith in case you go to court. It also shows you are a professional with professional standards. Did you do the job right? No streaks, no sloppy work, no smears Ect. This is not meant to insult you! Because I promise people will point out every single flaw. Keep emails, write down phone conversations, keep notes! If she gave you the go ahead and saw a sample of the finished product and she doesn't like the color this is her problem. If she had you paint the room and hated it..she still owes you for it. If she hasn't paid you go to small claims court. She is still liable and still needs to pay for your work. I get to know people and pay attention before I do business with them. I don't think there is a thing wrong with the paint or your job. What she envisioned she just didn't like it. Keep track and write everything down she says. This will help you later on. Keep your sample piece. I don't think anything you say or do is going to change this woman's mind. And there are just people out there like that through no fault of your own. But you will have to be able to stand up for yourself. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row when it's time.

@Judi Parmer Todd Thank you for your excellent advice! I was already thinking that I need to get more down in writing if I'm crazy enough to take on a similar commission. In this case I was introduced to the client by a friend and the work was organised by a colleague, I normally paint furniture to sell and occasionally do a custom piece for a customer. This was all far too informal and I'm paying for it now! She is exploiting the situation and my goodwill. Her ex-partner (who owns the house and paid for the initial work - a very complicated scenario that probably accounts for some of the madness) is calling me to try to resolve this so I hope I can get some sense from him, I think my blood pressure may come down after that <bigger grin>! Once again thanks for the help and support.

Gerry I am really sorry. There are people your just not going to make happy ever. Sometimes and I have had this happen in business it is better to cut your losses. And maybe this is one of them. Please keep us updated.
  • I think it's the lighting Gerry, like you said - were the top and bottom cupboards the exact same originally? I have 2 pieces I did in Antoinette - the one under the window looks very white - the one in the corner looks like a true pink - the lighting !!!

@Simply Vintageous...by Suzan Yes - who was it that said 'two nations divided by a common language' ?! LMAO too...which is a big improvement on crying and having imaginary conversations with this woman where I annihilate her with my superior reasoning and wit :-))

It is probably the lightening. I know that if you use varnish and not the suggested wax it can alter the color..Oh grr...hopefully you will hear back for AS and she can give you some advice..Hang in there! I'm sure that they turned out beautiful and she just needs time to adjust to the new color!

@Michelle Koch Thanks Michelle, the problem is she insists that some of the cabinets are different colours which just isn't possible!! They have all been painted and varnished exactly the same, I've explained this to her repeatedly, she's basically accusing me of lying now :-( I actually do think they look good but she has a lot of other issues in her life and I think I'm paying the price. Thanks for the support, I'll keep you posted!

Its the gray coloring. Gray is hard to work with. I had pros paint 90% of my house walls gray. Left them and when to my shop. Came home to blue walls. when you open the can its gray. Took the same can of paint to my shop and painted a wall and its gray. Depends on what's been done under the paint. Call the paint company before this job costs you more than you'd like.

It has to be the lighting! Tell your client that in the new homes in our subdivision (which was named the #1 spot to retire in the magazine) are 2 different colors on purpose!!! She is lucky these are showing a difference as this is the current trend. Maybe the woods are different, therefore taking the colors differently? I don't know but I sure hope this is resolved soon as I know how upsetting this is !!!

Clarification - the cupboards are being installed having 2 different colors OR the cabinets are different from the island....very classy and up to date! Let's hope your client accepts this and moves on w/o any further trouble. Some people just like to complain about nothing, just hoping to get a discount and not have to pay the full amount...sad but true.
